If you find that you are conscious of deep facial lines and wrinkles and feel that they are
preventing you smiling, or that they make you self conscious then thinking about an anti
wrinkle treatment with dermal facial fillers could be exactly
right for you.
Facial fillers can be used either on their own or in conjunction with other facial skin treatments such as BOTOX. Dermal Fillers are used to treat your skin in the following ways:
Dermal Fillers are non-surgical cosmetic skin treatments used to bring a more youthful appearance by restoring volume or fullness to the face and lips. These simple injections work by filling in any folds or wrinkles in the skin - the result is rapid and can be seen as soon as your treatment is completed.
These lines, wrinkles and folds in the skin are caused by the natural aging process, but are exaggerated by the sun, poor diet and smoking. This causes the skin to lose collagen and elasticity as well as fat and the natural moisturising ability of our skin. As our skin deteriorates it looks less firm and youthful but it also thins out, this thinning of the skin, coupled with the loss of elasticity and moisturising ability results in skins folds, lines and wrinkles.

Put simply, dermal filler injections are used to restore that lost volume in the face by plumping out lines, wrinkles and folds.
There are essentially two types of filler we use:
Semi permanent fillers
These fillers last for up to 18 months, examples of these are:
Radiesse has the effect of a dermal filler and is a synthetic calcium suspension within a gel. Radiesse has been used extensively in medical and dental surgeries for a number of years now and increases volume in your skin by stimulating collagen production.
Sculptra, this acts is a skin 'volumiser' and works by encouraging your skins own natural collagen production. This collagen production thickens your skin to replace the thinning effects of the aging process we discussed earlier. Times depend upon exactly where the filler is applied and the exact formulation used.
Non permanent Fillers
These fillers which are derived from Hyaluronic Acid (HA) and last for around 6-12 months. examples of these are:
Times depend upon exactly where the filler is applied and the exact formulation used.
Hyaluronic Acid (HA) is a naturally occurring lubricant and moisturiser in our skin, joints and eyes which has an ability to attract and store water. The Hyaluronic Acid that we use is produced from a bacteria and does not come from either humans or animals.
Restylane has been used for around 10 years now with over 6 million people benefiting from its skin smoothing ability, this shows it is a clinically proven and safe method of wrinkle reduction.
There are other brands of fillers available which may be preferred by other practitioners.
As the dermal facial filler is gently broken down by your body and the level of volume you gained lessens, it is a simple procedure to have a 'top up' to maintain that volume. If you opt to not have this top up then as your skin returns to how it was before treatment you may find your facial wrinkles slowly returning.
Collagen fillers
Because these fillers don't last as long as the more modern types (such as HA) their popularity is slowly declining. They also need an allergy test 28 days prior to starting any treatment to ensure you don't have an adverse reaction to their use,
2 examples of collagen fillers are:
Dermal Facial Fillers are used in various gel viscosities depending on the depth of wrinkles we are smoothing out. Deeper folds and wrinkles, for example around your nose and the corner of your mouth, may require a thinker gel. Where as less deep wrinkles, line and folds, such as crows feet and wrinkles around your eyes may requires a thinner gel.
Of course all gels are supplied to us in sterile syringes that are already filled with the gel, ready for immediate use.
A topical gel, or local anaesthetic cream will be used to gently numb the area we are treating. For more sensitive areas we may chose to numb the area completely using a process similar to a dental anaesthetic. Both options mean your treatment is always as comfortable as possible and you will always be provided with instructions with what to do to enhance the benefits further once you get home.
Severe side effects of Dermal Fillers are very rare with most people getting back to their normal routine immediately after treatment. The most common side effects of the dermal facial fillers include mild bruising or bleeding and sometimes mild swelling - it depends on exactly the treatment that has been used and the areas treated, but most side effects last for only a few days. you should always be informed of any possible side effects before treatment and a good practitioner will always explain them for you.
Many thousands of dermal filler treatments have been carried out in the UK and even more around the world, with few serious or lasting side effects.
In some rare cases there is an allergic reaction to the dermal filler used. These can include redness, itching or mild bumps under the skin - fortunately these allergic reactions are extremely rare. Another possible reaction is a break out of cold sores, if you have suffered with these in the past your practitioner may ask you to take a short course of anti-viral medication for a few days after your treatment just to be sure that your cold sores don't recur.
Dermal facial fillers are suitable as an anti-wrinkle treatment or most people, as with any medical procedure (no matter how safe) a good practitioner will always ask you a number of medical questions before starting treatment.
Dermal facial fillers are also often used in conjunction with other anti-wrinkle treatments such as BOTOX or chemical peels, when you come to see us for your initial review we will let you know the best course of treatment(s) to overcome your specific concerns.
